60 Gal cube

This tank has gone through a few different changes, but has settled in. I'd originally wanted some finer foreground leaf shapes, but the plecos would have none of that, this plant does not uproot and and allows a nice understory place for the plecos to grub around and the RCS to pick and clean anything missed by the plecos. I have 15 caves made into this piece of wood for the plecos(Leopard frog). the brass tetras are about 2 years old, this is as big as they get, very pretty and excellent schooling, lively fish. Maybe 100 RCS in here. Simple display, but low light + easy care, makes it a nice tank.

Good current, flourite sand, wet/dry filter, 1.7 w/gal and about 30 micromols along the bottom.

Recently send a basket ball sized piece of bolbitus off for sale, and about 50 dwarf hygros. 30 RCS are culled about once every month or two from the filter.

Now if I can get some Leopard frog fry or have some tetras' spawn, I'm in good shape.

Is this wood in one piecečLook like some old stump shaped like mountain-and it's very original.
Do you know species of this woodč

Coyote, in Pet Center in Belgrade you can find mangroves shaped like this. I purchased one like 5-6 month ago but by mistake, and I give it away to a friend of mine. Now, when I see this, I must admit that I am sorry not to have it anymore

Bald Cypress, common in Florida and the Southern eastern part of the USA.
Looks more like the Hawaiian cliffs called pali in native Hawaiian language.

I cut the bottom and glued to the base of the tank.
It got covered by Fissidens really bad and I recently pulled it off, so the wood looks strange.

I do not like the look of the Staruogyne porto velho really, but there are few good alternatives for the foreground that the plecos will not tear up and that will do well without a lot more work.

But overall, the tank looks nice and is easy to care for.

You can order this wood off ebay, but shipping will be a lot to your country!!!
Use what you can find locally is always my advice.

Hy. Tom I have some questions for you!
When there is algae issue, how you tackleč
Where you find inspiration for your settingsč
Are there any tactics or techniques you use to make arrangement decisions in your designsč Do you use any guidelines or rules for wood or rock placementč

Yes, perhaps not, but..... perhaps something even more interesting and more locally relevant to your region and cultureč I have found many interesting things everywhere I have traveled.

I have few algae issues.
I learned long ago that nutrients where not the enemy.
So that allowed me to focus more on light and CO2.

Now I add lower light+ good CO2/rich nutrients and sediments.
I have no issues.

I have a rather different view about aquascaping.
I like to explore different things, not the traditional layouts and gardens.
I also like wood as a media, I liked this even before I got into plants, as well as rocks.

Ispiration I can get easily from my travels and where I live, but often as is the case, I find some nice hardscaping materials I really likie and try to find a tank that will fit. I do not try to fit the scaping materials to the tank, rather, the tank to the scaping materials.

I also like to break the rules.
I have my own goals with a layout, and often it's a good deal about the fish I plan on keeping, I see many aquariums with nice ordered layouts, but no fish!!!

I am an "aquarist" first and formost. Aquascaping is secondary, but still important. How to blend the fishes environment and the scaping together is awlays a trade off. Not everyone holds this view, most aquascapers do not.

Many are poor aquarist and not able to keep many difficult fish species or breed for many years in the same tanks. I bred fish and a shrimp, as well as garden. I make a significant amount of $ off these aquariums , more than the electric bill for the entire home from plant and fish/livestock sales.

Just like a farmer sells pigs, cows, milk and crops.

Aquascapers rarely have such goals.
Still, I've made a lot more doing this $ wise than anyone has winning aquascaping prizesThumb up

haha

As far as design if it looks good, it is good.
I am simple in this regard.
I can pick it apart and iscuss the details etc, but I rarely bother, I do take my time with the layout, think about it a long time AND MOVE THINGS AROUND UNTIL I'M HAPPY WITH IT.

This requires no background in art etc, just see what you like and play around with it, you decide. Not other people! You must live with the tank , not a judge or some other "expert". Often they can help you improve, but many are very critical, I do not think that helps the hobby that much though.

the more experience and work you do with the media of scaping, the better you become , Amano was not that good in the start, now he is, and he's also one the best aquatic photographers there is.

That helps!!!
So it's not just being a good aquascaper, it's many things.

Regards,
Tom Barr
